A non-invasive treatment for precancerous and cancerous lesions
About Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a gold standard treatment to treat precancerous and cancerous lesions. The treatment involves the application of a photosensitizing agent which, when activated by a specific wavelength of light, produces a form of oxygen that kills abnormal cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. This treatment is especially helpful in treating actinic keratoses (AK), which is often unseen below the skin’s surface. In addition to treating sun damage, PDT kills microbial cells and therefore, treatments can be specifically designed to reduce acne lesions.
What can Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) do for you
Photodynamic Therapy provides Kelowna and Okanagan Valley patients with a safe and highly effective way to maintain the health of their skin by removing surface and subsurface skin irregularities and destroying acne-causing bacteria. The downtime is quite minimal with PDT treatments, presenting as mild redness, flaking and darkening of skin lesions, which slough away after 7-10 days. These qualities, along with the visible benefits of correcting sun damage and acne, make Photodynamic Therapy an appealing solution for preserving the health and beauty of the skin. As with most treatments, outcomes may vary depending on the patient.
