PLATELET-RICH PLASMA (A-PRP®)
More recently, PRP has been found to be effective in many more areas of medicine, including cosmetic medicine.
What Is Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP)?
PRP is a natural product created from your own body. A small amount of blood is drawn from you and placed in a sterile tube that is spun down in a centrifuge to separate the different components of the blood. Red and white blood cells are divided from the platelets and the plasma (the clear fluid). This plasma now contains a higher than normal number of platelets and is called platelet rich plasma, or PRP. Although platelets are best known for their importance in clotting blood, platelets also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors which accelerate tissue repair and wound healing. PRP has a long history of being used in orthopaedic medicine, dentistry, and reconstructive surgery. More recently, PRP has been found to be effective in many more areas of medicine, including cosmetic medicine.
How do we utilize PRP?
PRP facials (AKA Vampire Facial)
Known popularly as the Vampire Facial, at Restore Vein & Skin Centre, we incorporate PRP treatments to give a natural approach to antiaging. While this treatment does not replace botox or deep dermal fillers, you do achieve a skin radiance and glow that will project skin health*. PRP used in this manner creates smoother skin texture and improved tone*. Best results are achieved over time and with a series of treatments. Similar to micro-needling or dermal rolling, treatment involves micro punctures into the skin with very small needles that is associated with minimal discomfort. An importance differentiator with our treatment is that PRP is injected into the skin with each micropuncture to greatly enhance collagen stimulation. Our suggested regimen consists of five treatments done every 3 weeks. The first, third, and fifth treatments utilize PRP while with the second and fourth treatments the PRP is replaced with vitamin infused hyaluronic acid. The effects can last up to 18 months, although optimum maintenance involves one PRP treatment every 6 months to a year. Topical numbing is available for those that prefer increased comfort with treatment. PRP can also be beneficial for those who suffer from acne scars*.
PRP as an adjunct to laser resurfacing:
With laser resurfacing treatments such as Halo, micro laser peels, Profractional and diVa, PRP used as an adjunct greatly speeds recovery and promotes further collagen stimulation*. We take advantage of the disrupted skin surface and instead of injecting PRP, we simply apply PRP directly over the surface of the treated area. The PRP Is rapidly absorbed and exerts its effect deep in the skin.
PRP is now a recognized treatment option for men and women experiencing hair loss. We utilize a specifically designed injection gun to direct PRP into the scalp at the depth that will best promote hair growth*. Due to the rapid vibrational effect of the gun and the very small needle diameter, pain is minimized compared to direct injection with a needle and syringe. The suggested regimen of treatment for women is one injection every 3 weeks for three treatments then a maintenance treatment every 6 months to a year. Men will require more treatments to maintain results. PRP should not be considered a “cure” for hair loss but it can be used to augment the response from concurrent therapy with Minoxidil topical therapy and oral antiadrogen therapy. There are many causes of hair loss and a consultation and examination with one of the physicians from Restore Vein & Skin Centre will help determine if PRP is likely to be of benefit.
Is PRP for me?
PRP has been used successfully in other medical and surgical disciplines for many years. The decision to use PRP is a personal decision and should be made after careful research, consideration and consultation with a physician. PRP is safe and natural because the procedure concentrates the platelets with their associated growth factors and injects them directly back into the area where it is needed. There is absolutely no chance of getting a blood infection from another human being. PRP involves using your own cells that are not modified or changed, and it will not be rejected by your immune system.
